Publishing Date: 1999-09-01
Features: This book selects 103 qu works from 56 qu composers of the Ming and Qing dynasties, as well as anonymous works, in order to reflect the developmental trajectory and general style of qu during the Ming and Qing periods. The selection is limited to writers whose birth and death years fall within the Ming and Qing dynasties. The works are primarily qu, but considering the conventions of the qu scene during the Ming and Qing periods, a small number of folk tunes, self-composed qu, and excerpts from dramatic qu have also been included. This series of books requires a "modern translation" format. Given the colloquial nature of qu, a word-for-word translation is impractical, so a translation method that explores the meaning of the qu and conveys the feelings is attempted. It is hoped that this work does not come across as superfluous.
