How to Deal with a 6-Year-Old Child's Stomach Pain
2. Acute Pancreatitis.
Children aged 2 or 3 rarely get this condition, but children aged 4 or 5 are more prone to it. The most common cause is overeating, usually on greasy, hard-to-digest foods. Pancreatitis can also be caused by a bile duct blockage due to gallstones (this is less common), or in some cases, leukemia patients treated with L-asparaginase.
The symptoms include pain in the upper left side of the navel. Parents may notice that the child has eaten a lot, is hugging their knees, and refuses to be touched on the upper left side of their abdomen.
Generally, acute pancreatitis can be cured, but acute hemorrhagic necrotizing pancreatitis can lead to shock very quickly. Symptoms include severe abdominal pain (the child refuses to let parents touch their stomach), vomiting, poor mental state, and a gray complexion. If not treated promptly, it can be fatal.
The first step in emergency treatment for pancreatitis is to fast, followed by a transition to a liquid diet for recovery.
