Patient's question:
Symptom Description: The baby is 2 months old. At 10 PM last night, while drinking milk, he vomited a large amount of milk. After vomiting, he immediately fell asleep and didn't drink milk again until 5 AM today. At 8 AM, after taking a bath, he slept again. Before yesterday, he didn't sleep much during the day. But today, he slept well, and his temperature is normal. What could be the reason?Past Treatment and Effect: No treatment has been given.
Help Needed: Is the baby sick?
Doctor's answer:
The stomach of an infant is not as pendulous as that of older children and adults; instead, it is in a horizontal position. This allows the stomach to have a smaller capacity, holding less food, and also makes it easier to return to the cardiac sphincter. Due to these factors, even under normal conditions, if a baby eats too much and lies flat immediately after feeding, milk can easily flow back through the cardiac sphincter into the esophagus and mouth, causing vomiting. If a child vomits occasionally and is otherwise in good spirits, it does not necessarily indicate illness. Experts advise, "It is not recommended to carry the baby to sleep all day." When placing the sleeping baby into the crib, the movement should be slower, and it is best to use a side-sleeping position to reduce the likelihood of vomiting. Generally, a baby can maintain this side-sleeping position for 2–3 hours. If parents are concerned about the baby's head shape or pressure on internal organs, they can change the baby's sleeping position after 1 hour.
