Features: In China, on the Yаньmén Guān outside the Loess Plateau, the small paths in the fields are scattered and winding. Thirty years ago, I lived in a small village beside one of these paths. It was a small village nestled in the undulating hills of the Loess Plateau, situated on an old, dry riverbed, surrounded by tall trees that had grown for decades. Along the western side of the village flowed a clear, narrow river that sometimes widened and sometimes narrowed. On the winding, uneven mountain paths came dirty sheep herds and dirty little shepherds, pulling out steaming fresh corn, wrapped in bright green corn leaves, recently cooked over firewood. The aroma of toasted corn filled our hands. I don’t know who would forget the rare sense of freedom in those awkward times. Everything from that year and that month often wandered into my paintings along the fields paths coming from afar.
