What are the reasons for a child not having a bowel movement for several days?

Patient's question:

Hello doctor, the child is a girl, 6 and a half years old. Since she was young, she has been having a bowel movement almost every two days. Recently, it has been four days between bowel movements. Each time, the initial stool is very dry and thick, and it's also quite difficult for her to pass it. She drinks a lot of water, but even with bananas, yogurt, and probiotics, she still has bowel movements this infrequently, which is not good for her health. What should I do? Thank you.

Doctor's answer:

If everything else appears fine but the bowel movement is long-lasting and the stool is not dry, it could be a bit of constipation, indicating poor digestion. At seven months, you should have started adding (rice powder) to her diet, or you should still offer her water frequently.
Advice: If she really doesn’t like drinking it, you could make her some juice and mix it with half (boiled water) to dilute it. Alternatively, you could boil some carrot water or celery water, which can increase the fiber content and promote gastrointestinal movement. If the stool is dry, it might be due to indigestion, so you should give her something to cool down her stomach!
