Features: Watercolor painting has been introduced to China for over a hundred years. Due to its painting methods and artistic interests being similar to traditional Chinese painting, it quickly spread throughout the country. In China, watercolor painting has experienced two major periods. The first was in the 1940s and 1950s, when watercolor painting research activities were highly active in the Jiangsu and Zhejiang regions, centered around Shanghai, giving rise to a large number of renowned watercolor painters such as Pan Sitong, Zhang Meisun, Shen Shaolun, and Lei Yu. Their works left a deep impression. At that time, Mr. Li Jianchen's book "How to Paint Watercolor" also influenced a generation, and I still vividly remember the paintings in the book. The second period was after the reform and opening-up, when Chinese arts experienced an unprecedented development. Watercolor art followed suit, and in 1984, the 6th National Fine Arts Exhibition marked the introduction of watercolor painting into the exhibition for the first time. Due to the large number of artists and the high quality of their works, a dedicated large exhibition area was set aside. This exhibition symbolized that the development of Chinese watercolor painting had entered a new historical stage. This book collects the works and writings of 40 contemporary Chinese middle-aged and young watercolor painters. From them, one can read their feelings about art, as well as their accounts of the conception and techniques behind their works. These works include both award-winning pieces and small practice sketches, but all are the authors' beloved creations born from heartfelt inspiration and intentional creativity.
