How is patent ductus arteriosus treated in newborns?

Patient's question:

My baby is a premature child. I was very worried about the child's condition from the beginning. Recently, the child has appeared with this series of conditions, and I am also very worried, afraid that the child will become worse. How is patent ductus arteriosus treated in newborns?

Doctor's answer:

After birth, functional closure occurs approximately 15 hours later, and 80% undergo anatomical closure within 3 months of birth. By one year, anatomical closure should be complete. If the patent ductus arteriosus is diagnosed, and contraindications are excluded, surgical treatment should be performed in principle. The appropriate age for surgery is 4 to 5 years old. If combined with other congenital heart diseases, early surgery can reduce the risk of infective endocarditis and pulmonary hypertension.
