Features: This book is a reference tool for readers with a medium level of education, teachers from primary, secondary, and high schools, as well as literary and artistic workers, to look up allusions when reading Tang poetry. It includes allusions cited or adapted from historical facts, stories, operas, myths, legends, ceremonial norms, and influential lines of poetry, lyrics, and prose from previous works. The interpretation of each allusion in the book consists of three parts:
- Source: Cite the original text of the allusion and indicate its source. Whenever possible, earlier sources are preferred, and disputes among predecessors are addressed. If the historical fact or story is too lengthy, it may be summarized in modern language but must still be referenced. The cited books should include the era and author; for well-known classics like the Analects or the Selected Works of Wen Xuan, the era and author are omitted.
- Explanation: Summarize the essence of the original text and clarify the general meaning of the allusion. If an allusion has multiple meanings, each should be explained sequentially without separate entries.
- Examples: Provide examples of how the allusion is used in the Complete Tang Poems, explaining its specific usage and particular meaning in each case, highlighting its rhetorical techniques and structural role. All examples are annotated with the author, title, and page number in the Complete Tang Poems (the book title is omitted, only the page number is listed).
