The 20th century was the period of most significant development and profound transformation in the history of Chinese historiography. New eras, new historical perspectives, new sources, new methods, and a new academic and cultural atmosphere all contributed to the historiography of 20th-century China. The chapters of this book, Chapter 1 and Chapter 2, discuss ancient historians, historians, and historical texts, covering one period; Chapters 3 to 5 cover the official historiography of Ma Rong and Ban Gu, private historiography from the Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties to the early Tang Dynasty, and the official historiography system after the Han and Wei dynasties, covering the second period; Chapters 6 to 9 discuss official and private historiography after the Tang and Song dynasties, the historiography of Liu Zhi and Zhang Xuecheng, and the achievements of Qing Dynasty historians, covering the third period (Note: In the original first edition, Chapter 10, "Trends in Recent Historiography," and the "Conclusion" were omitted by the author when the revised edition was published. To restore the book's appearance from the 1940s and to understand the author's views on historiographical trends at the time, they have been included as an appendix in this edition).
