Patient's question:
I am blood type B, and my wife is blood type O. Last week, we just completed an ABO blood type screening test. The results were: my wife's blood type is O positive (+), and my blood type is B positive (+). The antibody titer is 1:4. What does this result mean? Is it normal? If it is normal, why did the doctor ask us to do a follow-up test?Doctor's answer:
Hello: Prenatal testing requires regular checks. If there are no other abnormal conditions, there is no need for testing. To prevent ABO blood type incompatibility between mother and fetus, which can lead to neonatal hemolytic disease, pregnant women with blood type incompatibility should start testing from the 8th week of pregnancy. When the titer of IgG anti-A (B) in the mother's serum is ≥64, there is a risk of harm to the infant, requiring close monitoring. When the titer is ≥128, the infant is likely to be harmed, requiring treatment and regular follow-up to reduce the antibody titer to below 1:64.
