[Preface] Publisher's Note
The 20th century was a period of most significant development and deepest transformation in the development of Chinese historiography. The emergence of new eras, new historical perspectives, new historical sources, new methodologies, and a new academic and cultural atmosphere all contributed to shaping Chinese historiography in the 20th century. The 20th-century Chinese historiography boasts a galaxy of scholars, a multitude of schools, a wealth of masterpieces, and a vibrant diversity, holding an extremely important position in the development of Chinese historiography. The Chinese historiography of today and tomorrow owes its existence and will continue to rely on the efforts of the predecessors; particularly, the emergence and development of Marxist historiography in China represent the forward direction of the progress of Chinese historiography.
The 20th-century Chinese historiography is an important reflection of the research achievements of Chinese historians in academic and cultural terms, becoming a grand record of the era. At the same time, it has also exerted a positive influence on the former, promoting social transformation and revolution, strengthening patriotism, enhancing national unity, driving social progress, improving national quality, and enriching people's wisdom.
The 20th-century Chinese historiography is an important part of world historiography in the 20th century. If the historiography of foreign countries in the 20th century had a significant impact on the development of Chinese historiography, then in recent decades, especially since the 1980s and 1990s, Chinese historiography has also been gradually expanding its influence on the development of foreign historiography. This two-way exchange and mutual influence will undoubtedly contribute to further advancing the development of world historiography.
At the dawn of the new century, the compilation and publication of Masterpieces of 20th-Century Chinese Historiography represent a systematic review and summary of the masterpieces of a century of historiography. It is a respect for their achievements in historiography and their status in the history of historiography, as well as a provision for later generations to study and research the outstanding heritage of 20th-century Chinese historiography.
