Patient's question:
Female, 5 years old, frequently complains of stomach pain. When asked where it hurts, she points to her navel. Sometimes she points to a spot slightly to the left or right of the navel. During stomach pain, she says she feels nauseous and wants to vomit. It has been happening for about 4 months!Doctor's answer:
Periumbilical pain is a common symptom in children. In most cases, as the attending physician mentioned, special examinations or treatments are not necessary. However, it is important to be aware of the following issues:
- Nighttime pain
- Frequent vomiting, even vomiting bile or coffee-ground-like substances
- Nighttime diarrhea
- Stool containing mucus and/or blood
- Stunted or regressive growth
- Prolonged extra-gastrointestinal symptoms, such as fever or rashes
- A family history of gastrointestinal diseases, especially in parents
If none of these symptoms are present, further observation can continue. Otherwise, medical attention is required.
Additionally, children should address issues of constipation by eating appropriate amounts of vegetables, fruits, and whole grains, drinking enough water, and maintaining a regular bowel movement habit.
