Patient's question:
My daughter was born on April 23, 2014. Her hearing screening failed at birth. At 8 months, her ABR test showed 80 dB in the left ear and 70 dB in the right ear; at 12 months, it showed 60 dB in the left ear and 70 dB in the right ear. CT scans showed no abnormalities. Both my husband and I are normal-hearing individuals. There are no cases of hearing impairment in my family. My mother has eight siblings, and none of them, their children, or grandchildren have hearing loss. My maternal grandparents and paternal grandparents took medicine regularly and were paralyzed, but they did not experience hearing decline. My pure-tone hearing test result was 5 dB at 8 kHz, and both I and my mother are among the few with excellent hearing in the normal population. My husband's grandparents have normal hearing, but his maternal grandmother and one aunt experienced hearing loss in their later years. His grandparents, uncles, aunts, and their children and grandchildren are all normal-hearing. My daughter is the second child; her older brother also has very sensitive hearing.Doctor's answer:
I don't know where in Nanjing it can be done. The Jiangsu Provincial People's Hospital is excellent in audiology. Currently, hearing loss gene testing only detects the four most common genes, not all. The child is considered to have bilateral moderate to severe sensorineural hearing loss and needs to be fitted with hearing aids as early as possible and undergo speech rehabilitation training. At the same time, hearing tests should be repeated every 3-6 months, and hearing aids should be adjusted according to hearing conditions.
