Wu Shichang is celebrated worldwide for his redology research. His monumental works, such as The Origin of the Dream of the Red Chamber and The Collected Works of Wu Shichang, have pioneered new paths in redology research. Beyond this, he was also a scholar of profound insight in the field of lyric poetry and a learned figure who integrated Eastern and Western knowledge, excelling in literature and history. In 1947, Wu Shichang was invited to teach at the University of Oxford in the UK and served as a member of the doctoral examination committees at both Oxford and Cambridge universities. After returning to China in 1962, he became a researcher at the Institute of Literature under the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Starting in 1978, he concurrently served as a member of the academic evaluation committee of the State Council Academic Degrees Commission. Additionally, he personally supervised the training of master’s and doctoral students. Wu Shichang was a sincere patriot. During the "May Fourth Movement," while studying at Jiaxing Xiu State High School, he led student patriotic movements. After the "September 18th Incident," Wu Shichang was the first to post the "Declaration to All Students" at Peking University, igniting the flames of anti-Japanese activism on campus and was elected as the first president of the Anti-Japanese Student Association of Peking University. After the victory in the War of Resistance, he published poems and essays in Xinhua Daily opposing Chiang Kai-shek’s civil war. In 1962, during a period of national hardship, he declined invitations from several universities abroad and responded to Premier Zhou Enlai’s call, leading his family back to China to participate in socialist construction. In his later years, Wu Shichang actively engaged in various social activities. He served as a member of the Fourth and Fifth National Committees of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), a member of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC), and as the vice chairman of the NPC’s Committee on Education, Science, Culture, and Health. Wu Shichang lived his life with integrity and pursued truth in scholarship. He never blindly followed authority or echoed others’ opinions. He advocated independent thinking and never retreated from principle, always maintaining a youthful vigor in his pursuit of truth. "Reading often keeps me awake, and I cannot change my aversion to evil," a line from his Self-Portrait at Seventy, reflects not only his poetic life but also his true character.
