Is childhood sleep twitching epilepsy?

Patient's question:

Yesterday, I went to a friend's house and saw their newborn child. The child is very small and usually sleeps a lot. It seems like the child often twitches while sleeping. The twitching isn't very frequent, and it doesn't look painful either. There's no history of epilepsy in the family, so I don't know if this could be epilepsy.

Doctor's answer:

Hello, when the child is sleeping, they may have twitching, but it is not epilepsy. The pre-epilepsy symptoms may manifest as smiling foolishly at people, unconscious grinding of teeth, habitually clicking the jaw, spitting saliva, night wandering, and other "automatic" phenomena. During conversation, they suddenly don't understand what the other person is saying, or they suddenly hold chopsticks and freeze during a meal. It can even lead to poor memory and sleep disturbances.
