Patient's question:
The issue of allergic rhinitis symptoms in babies. My baby has been having a runny nose for almost a month. If it's a cold, there are no other symptoms. I saw the symptoms of rhinitis in a newspaper and thought they were a bit like my baby's condition.Doctor's answer:
Childhood allergic rhinitis, the typical symptoms include nasal itching, frequent and continuous sneezing attacks, copious watery nasal discharge, and nasal congestion. The specific manifestations are as follows:Nasal itching and continuous sneezing: Daily episodes of frequent and continuous sneezing attacks, followed by nasal congestion and rhinorrhea, are particularly noticeable in the morning and at night. Nasal itching is common in most patients, and sometimes the nose, soft palate, face, and external auditory canal may also itch. In seasonal rhinitis, eye itching is more pronounced.
Copious watery nasal discharge: Along with sneezing, a large amount of nasal discharge flows out. However, as the acute reaction subsides or disappears, the discharge may decrease or become thicker. If secondary infection occurs, it may turn into purulent secretions.
Nasal congestion: The severity varies, it can be unilateral or bilateral, intermittent or persistent, or alternating.
Impaired sense of smell: If caused by mucosal edema or nasal congestion, it is usually temporary. If caused by persistent mucosal edema leading to olfactory nerve atrophy, it is usually persistent.
