How to Treat Infant and Toddler Diarrhea

Patient's question:

Infantile diarrhea has lasted for 4 days, breastfeeding, the stool is curd-like or watery, sometimes continuous 3, 4 times

Doctor's answer:

Hello, the baby is suffering from acute gastroenteritis, which is related to viral and bacterial infections.
Mild Diarrhea: 3 to 10 episodes per day, with egg-like, watery stools. Occasional spitting up and vomiting, mild abdominal distension, etc.
Severe Diarrhea: More than 10 episodes per day, up to dozens of times, watery stools, vomiting, fever, grayish complexion, restlessness, and in severe cases, coma or convulsions. Symptoms may also include dehydration and electrolyte imbalance.
The main treatment is anti-infection. Antibiotics should be used based on the intestinal infection, primarily to control E. coli. Current medications include sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim or berberine, along with maintaining fluid and electrolyte balance.
It is recommended to reduce milk intake and extend feeding intervals, and to temporarily suspend or reduce supplementary foods. For formula-fed infants, diluted milk or rice water can be given temporarily for easy digestion, followed by gradually increasing the milk intake.
