How to deal with neonatal jaundice decreasing from 16 to 9 on the 16th day

Patient's question:

The newborn is 16 days old today. After a natural birth and staying in the hospital for 4 days, the jaundice level reached 16 at discharge. They took medicine and exposed themselves to sunlight at home. After finishing the first box of Yinzhi Huang, the level checked was 13. To this day, after finishing two boxes of Yinzhi Huang, the jaundice level checked is 9. Do they still need to continue taking medicine?

Doctor's answer:

In your case, it may be physiological jaundice. In mild cases, jaundice appears as a light yellow hue, limited to the face and neck, or may extend to the torso, with sclera also becoming yellow. It usually subsides within 2 to 3 days and the skin color returns to normal by the 5th to 6th day. In severe cases, jaundice similarly starts from the head and spreads to the feet, affecting the entire body. Vomiting and cerebrospinal fluid may also turn yellow, with the duration lasting more than a week. In some premature infants, it can persist for up to 4 weeks, with the stool still appearing yellow and no bilirubin in the urine. It is recommended to use blue light therapy, which can be effective.
