Features: This book is part of the series of undergraduate textbooks for teaching Chinese as a second language at Beijing Language and Culture University, suitable for students in the second semester of their first year with equivalent proficiency. The book consists of forty lessons, each structured as follows:
1. Reading Prompt
2. Text
3. Exercises
1. Reading Prompt
Before each lesson, some question-and-answer prompts related to the text content are designed as reading prompts to prepare students mentally for the reading process. These questions help students guess and predict the general content of the text, sparking their interest and guiding them to read with questions in mind. Therefore, students are required to review these prompts before reading the text.
2. Text
The lessons in this book cover a wide range of topics and rich content, including both expository and narrative texts. By reading these short passages with different themes and styles, students can expand their vocabulary and improve their reading comprehension skills.
3. Exercises
The purpose of the exercises is to assess students' reading comprehension of the text. The exercises include: judging the truthfulness of statements based on the text, understanding words and sentences, answering questions, etc. To cultivate students' ability to read quickly, the exercises also include several short passages of varying lengths for speed-reading practice. It is recommended that teachers, in line with the requirements, encourage students to complete this section independently within the allotted time. For common issues, teachers may provide appropriate explanations.
Words encountered in timed reading exercises are not annotated. Students can refer to the exercises for reading and complete them accordingly.
