Patient's question:
Since yesterday, I've been avoiding milk and have a sore throat. It's said to be acute upper respiratory tract infection, and I was prescribed medicine. I went to the Wujiang People's Hospital for Children to see a doctor.Doctor's answer:
Etiological Treatment(1) Antibacterial Therapy
Antibacterial drugs are not necessary for simple viral infections. When there is evidence of bacterial infection, such as elevated white blood cell count, tonsillar exudate, or yellow sputum, penicillin, first-generation cephalosporins, macrolides, or quinolones may be used as appropriate. Sensitive antibacterial drugs should be selected based on the pathogen in very rare cases.
(2) Antiviral Therapy
Currently, there are no specific antiviral drugs available, and the overuse of antiviral medications can lead to influenza virus resistance. Therefore, patients without fever and normal immune function who have been ill for more than two days generally do not require antiviral treatment. Immunocompromised patients may receive routine early treatment. Broad-spectrum antiviral drugs such as ribavirin and oseltamivir have strong inhibitory effects on influenza virus, parainfluenza virus, and respiratory syncytial virus, which can shorten the duration of illness.
3. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Treatment
TCM herbs with (clearing heat and detoxifying) and antiviral effects can also be used to help alleviate symptoms and shorten the duration of illness. Xiao Chaihu granules and Banlangen granules are widely used.
