Why does the baby cry when drinking from a bottle?

Patient's question:

My baby is now 8 months old. We have been mixed feeding, but recently he has stopped eating from the bottle and formula. He will eat breast milk and solid food, and it has been a week already. He doesn't cry or fuss for 5 hours without eating, as if he doesn't feel hungry at all. Whenever he sees the bottle, he starts crying.

Doctor's answer:

Express the breast milk, put it in a bottle, and feed it to the baby. If the baby doesn't eat like this, use a cup or a small spoon to feed it. It's best not to let the mother breastfeed. Once the baby is accustomed to the bottle or cup, gradually mix the breast milk with formula, gradually reducing the concentration. This helps the baby get used to drinking formula. The characteristics of the weaning phase are that the child's growth and development are normal, and they respond well, although their milk intake may temporarily increase. Usually, it takes about a month for the appetite to naturally and completely recover. Although the baby eats less during this stage, most can still maintain the expected growth and development, and there is no evidence to suggest it affects intellectual development. Therefore, mothers don't need to worry.
