Features: Each chapter of the book highlights key points while maintaining internal coherence. It addresses both broad questions and detailed inquiries, ideally meeting the needs of a broad readership. In response to the shortcomings of some current aerospace popular science books—such as outdated information, insufficient knowledge, and conceptual errors—this book places special emphasis on the following five aspects:
1. Authority. The book provides a detailed disclosure of the specific technologies and knowledge related to the Shenzhou spacecraft. Authored by leaders of the Shenzhou program, aerospace popular science writers, and aerospace technology experts, it has undergone rigorous revisions and reviews, ensuring high accuracy and authority.
2. Comprehensiveness. The book is divided into four chapters, covering nearly all aspects of manned spaceflight. It includes the history of manned spaceflight, the latest developments in global manned space activities, comparisons of various manned spacecraft, and the extraordinary achievements, work, and daily lives of astronauts (e.g., eating, wearing, living, and traveling in space). This allows readers to find answers to a wide range of questions about manned spaceflight.
3. Systematicity. The book consists of 104 question-and-answer sections, systematically addressing a series of issues in various fields of manned spaceflight. Readers can gain a comprehensive overview of manned space technology while exploring specific areas of interest, guiding them further into deeper study.
4. Novelty. The book incorporates rich, up-to-date information on international manned spaceflight. It comprehensively introduces world records set by male and female astronauts in space and the experiences of the world’s first and second space tourists aboard the International Space Station. The accompanying color illustrations are rare and fresh.
5. Engaging Nature. While ensuring accuracy, the book focuses on engaging content and writing, enhancing readability. Over 200 carefully selected color images complement the text, creating a vivid and visually appealing experience that elevates the book’s quality.
It is worth noting that the renowned scientist Qian Xuesen, aged over 90, wrote the preface for the book, enthusiastically praising the success of the Shenzhou 5 spacecraft and recommending it to aerospace enthusiasts. The entire editorial team expresses deep gratitude for his contribution.
The great pioneer, aerospace thinker, and theorist Konstantin Tsiolkovsky once predicted: "Earth is the cradle of humanity, but humanity will not stay in the cradle forever. They will continue to explore new celestial bodies and space. First, humanity will cautiously pass through the atmosphere, then conquer the space of the solar system."
On October 15, 2003, China’s first manned astronaut, carrying the flying dreams of the Chinese nation and the trust of 1.3 billion people, embarked on a journey to space aboard the Shenzhou 5 spacecraft. On October 16, he successfully returned, fulfilling the millennia-old Chinese dream of spaceflight!
China is the fifth country to independently launch artificial satellites, the third to master returnable satellite technology, and the fifth to launch geostationary orbit satellites. Now, it has achieved a historic breakthrough in space, becoming the third manned space power in the world after the Soviet Union and the United States. Among the many nations advancing into space, China leads the world with confidence.
How has China achieved such remarkable aerospace accomplishments? How did China decide on the manned spaceflight program and build the Shenzhou spacecraft? How does China select and train astronauts? These are questions eagerly sought by the Chinese people and aerospace enthusiasts. Additionally, the history of manned spaceflight, the unique environment of space, various manned spacecraft, the daily lives of astronauts, and the trends and prospects of global manned space development are topics of great interest to the general public and young people.
Addressing these questions and satisfying the curiosity and needs of readers is the purpose of writing Shenzhou’s Dream. To unveil the mysteries of the Shenzhou spacecraft, decode the secrets of outer space, and detail the extraordinary lives of astronauts, the book is divided into four chapters, each containing dozens of question-and-answer sections. This structure allows readers to gain a comprehensive understanding of each chapter while finding answers to specific queries.
The first chapter contains 35 questions, focusing on the great achievements of China’s manned spaceflight program, the Shenzhou spacecraft. Authored by experts such as the chief commander and chief designer of the Shenzhou program, the answers provide a holistic overview and are authoritative. The chapter also includes contributions from Shenzhou engineers, covering the 13 subsystems of the spacecraft to ensure completeness and accuracy.
The second chapter contains 22 questions, emphasizing the significance of manned spaceflight, its historical stages, practical applications, world records set by famous male and female astronauts, space tourism, and humanity’s journey to the Moon and Mars.
The third chapter contains 22 questions, introducing the fascinating daily lives of astronauts in space. The Shenzhou 5 spacecraft carried China’s first astronaut, a figure of global attention. The chapter details everything from eating and wearing to living and traveling in space, likely the most engaging section for young readers and the general public.
The fourth chapter contains 25 questions, providing a detailed overview of various manned spacecraft worldwide, including spacecraft, space shuttles, space stations, and spaceplanes. It explains their functions, characteristics, similarities, differences, and relationships. Specific examples include the Soviet Vostok spacecraft, the American Apollo lunar spacecraft, the Soviet/Russian Soyuz crewed spacecraft and Progress cargo spacecraft; the space shuttles of the United States and the Soviet Union/Russia; NASA’s Skylab; the Soviet/Russian Salyut and Mir space stations; and the International Space Station, a collaborative project involving 16 countries currently under construction. The chapter also discusses future spaceplanes, offering readers a comprehensive understanding of the history and latest developments in global manned spaceflight while highlighting the complexity and challenges of the technology.
