Features: ListentoThis is a listening course designed according to the requirements of the Outline for English Teaching in the Basic Stage of English Majors in Higher Education and the Outline for Advanced English Teaching in Higher Education, as promulgated by the State Education Commission, taking into account the characteristics of English teaching in China. The entire course consists of three volumes. Each volume includes a Student's Book and a Teacher's Book, which serve different purposes but complement each other. The first volume is suitable for first-year university students or beginners in English; the second volume is aimed at second-year university students and self-learners with intermediate English proficiency; the third volume is available for third and fourth-year university students and self-learners with advanced English skills.
The Teacher's Book includes three parts: recorded materials, exercises and answers, and supplementary reading materials. The content is innovative, and the listening materials are selected from audio resources from the late 1980s. The recordings were reviewed by Canadian experts working at Beijing Foreign Studies University, primarily in standard American or British accents, with clear audio. The exercises are lively in format. The design of the exercises draws on the formats of the American TOEFL and British exams, and includes additional forms such as true-or-false questions, fill-in-the-blanks, dictation, lecture notes, and answer questions based on notes. Each volume includes a Student's Book and a Teacher's Book, which serve different purposes but complement each other.
The Student's Book primarily focuses on the vocabulary lists, cultural background notes, and exercises from the listening materials. ListentoThis 3 is suitable for third and fourth-year university students and self-learners with advanced English skills. The listening materials are mainly selected from radio and television broadcasts in the United States. The book is divided into 36 lessons, each consisting of three parts: 1. Brief news; 2. Important news reports; 3. In-depth interviews. The content covers major international events, the politics, economy, history, culture, and customs of countries worldwide (with a focus on the United States). It not only helps improve students' listening skills but also broadens their knowledge.
The Student's Book includes three parts: vocabulary lists, cultural background notes, and exercises. Before using the book, students should familiarize themselves with the vocabulary lists and read the cultural background notes. The exercises are usually divided into two major categories: "General Comprehension" and "Focusing on Details." The exercises for the first category should be completed after listening to the recording once. The exercises for the second category can be done after replaying the recording one or two times.
The Teacher's Book includes recorded materials, exercises and answers, and supplementary reading materials. To facilitate classroom use, exercises with answers are printed at the end of each part. The reading materials are directly excerpted from major American newspapers, magazines, or reference books, based on the major events covered in each lesson. They not only provide additional background knowledge but often also elaborate on the recordings. Therefore, teachers can select important content to introduce to students when they encounter difficulties in understanding due to insufficient background knowledge.
