Review of "Eighteen Springs"

Author: Eileen Chang
Publisher:
Publish Date: 2003-01-01
Features: Eighteen Springs is a realistic work in the traditional sense: it possesses typical settings, typical characters, historical life content, and the trend of historical progress, etc. Eileen Chang was, after all, a young and talented woman. Among the writers who came over from the old society via the "express train," she seems to have been one of the earlier ones to write works that showed goodwill towards the new society. We should not doubt that her writing truly stemmed from her personal experiences and her sincere hope for a bright future. Those familiar with her life will see many of her own experiences reflected in this work. She seemed to narrate this love story belonging to a young life without much effort, a story that must have been nurtured in her heart for a very, very long time.
