Chapter 1: Deng Xiaoping's Leadership Philosophy (Part 1)
Leadership, as a form of social practice, a social function, and a social relationship, has always been a subject of great attention. Research on leadership has been enduring. Politicians, historians, management scholars, and others have proposed a variety of claims and viewpoints on leadership. Comrade Deng Xiaoping, an outstanding proletarian revolutionary, statesman, military strategist, and thinker who explored the construction of a socialist China with Chinese characteristics, put forward a series of ideas and propositions on the leadership of socialist China with Chinese characteristics, preliminarily resolved a series of fundamental issues in this regard, and formed the new and scientific leadership theory system of Deng Xiaoping's leadership philosophy.
I. The Connotation and Basic Content of Deng Xiaoping's Leadership Philosophy
To study and learn about Deng Xiaoping's leadership philosophy, one must first clarify what it is.
(1) The Connotation of Deng Xiaoping's Leadership Philosophy
The connotation of Deng Xiaoping's leadership philosophy includes at least the following three aspects:
1. Deng Xiaoping's leadership philosophy is the Marxist leadership philosophy under the historical conditions where peace and development have become the themes of the era, and reform and opening-up and socialist modernization have become the themes of the Communist Party of China's work.
Deng Xiaoping's leadership philosophy is a continuation of Marxist leadership philosophy and belongs to the category of Marxist leadership philosophy. However, it is the Marxist leadership philosophy under the conditions where the background and social historical conditions have undergone tremendous changes. From the perspective of the era and its characteristics, the most significant change is the transformation from the "Cold War" period between the capitalist and socialist camps, with "the people want revolution, countries want independence, and nations want liberation" as the main trend and characteristic, to peace and development becoming the themes of the era. This is because:

From the overall international situation, the forces that restrain war and promote world peace are continuously developing, making it possible to achieve a relatively long period of peace and avoid world wars.
(2) An increasing number of developing countries have consciously recognized that true national independence and state independence can only be achieved by achieving economic development, changing the state of poverty and backwardness. As a result, the issue of development has become a prominent problem for the three-quarters of the world's population in the developing world and has become another trend in the contemporary world.
(3) The world's new technological revolution is in full swing, and developed countries also face the issue of further development. As a result, the issue of development has become particularly prominent in the contemporary world, with global significance.
From China's social historical conditions, the focus has shifted from class struggle to economic construction as the central task, with reform and opening-up and modernization as the main theme. Due to various complex reasons, when the task of socialist transformation was completed and the socialist system was established, and when the Party's work should have shifted its focus to the economy, this transformation was not fully realized; or, when class struggle had weakened and economic construction needed to be strengthened, instead, class struggle was continued and emphasized, causing great losses to our Party and state, and hindering the development of the economy and the improvement of people's lives for a relatively long period. With the Third Plenary Session of the 11th Central Committee as a landmark, this situation was fundamentally changed. Under the leadership of the second generation of the leadership collective with Deng Xiaoping at its core, our Party led the people of the country to begin a new great revolution and great practice.
Postscript:
This book is a result of the sub-project of the major national social science research project of the "Nineth Five-Year Plan" under the Central Party School of the Communist Party of China, titled "The Thought and Practice of Deng Xiaoping's Leadership in Building the Party," completed by the author based on years of teaching and research in the field of Party leadership and leadership science at the Central Party School of the Communist Party of China. During the writing process, this book was supported by my leaders, colleagues, and family. Professor Chen Dengcai, Director of the Party Building Teaching and Research Department of the Central Party School of the Communist Party of China, wrote the preface for this book. Comrades Pei Chuanyong, Song Zhengkuan, Sun Xiguo, Yang Xishan, and others provided assistance in the research and writing of ancient Chinese leadership thought and foreign leadership theory. Comrades Lu Xiaosheng, Xu Naiya, and others put in hard work for the publication of this book. Here, I extend my sincere gratitude to them.
How to successfully implement the leadership of socialist China with Chinese characteristics is a major historical issue and a complex issue that requires multi-level and multi-perspective research. This book studies it from the perspectives of guidance, key points, and reference, attempting to reveal the laws of successfully implementing the leadership of socialist China with Chinese characteristics on a macro level. Whether it is effective or not will be tested by the readers.
After finishing this book, reflecting on it, I deeply feel that further research is needed, and I hope for even better research results. At the same time, I also hope that the readers will offer criticism and corrections for this book.
