Features: The Dipterocarpaceae is a large family and the dominant tree species in Southeast Asian tropical rainforests, accounting for approximately 70% of forest volume and 3/4 of China's imported timber. This book covers 3 subfamilies, 15 genera, and 365 species. To accurately understand local tree species names and improve wood utilization, it provides a comparative and detailed study of Dipterocarpaceae wood from the perspectives of wood classification and systematic anatomical analysis.
In terms of wood utilization: it includes Latin names, Chinese names, tree height and diameter, commercial wood names, and supply conditions; the macroscopic and microscopic structures of the wood; wood density, drying shrinkage and expansion properties; major physical and mechanical properties such as compressive strength, tensile strength, and bending strength; as well as processing properties like drying, machining, and durability, along with wood applications.
In terms of systematic anatomical analysis: it evaluates the correct and alternative Latin names of tree species; and based on descriptions, it compares the wood of Dipterocarpaceae, American Dipterocarpaceae, and African Dipterocarpaceae from the perspective of wood structure.
This book introduces a new method for processing wood mechanical strength data, utilizing data obtained from wood mechanical strength tests conducted according to international standards rather than self-selected samples. It further conducts comparative tests between domestic and international wood mechanical strength testing methods, obtaining conversion coefficients. This approach ensures the reliability of wood strength data while also allowing for reliable comparisons with China's wood strength data.
