What is the reason for blood in the stool?

Patient's question:

My baby had green bowel movements for about ten days in August, and then a stool test showed 20-30 white blood cells and 6-10 red blood cells. The doctor recommended hospitalization, and the baby received intravenous fluids for six days before going home. A few days later, the baby started having golden yellow bowel movements. The baby recovered, and we were all very happy. But recently, I sometimes noticed a few red blood streaks in the baby's stool. Worried, I took the baby to the hospital for another stool test. The results showed 2-4 white blood cells and a weak positive occult blood test. The doctor prescribed a course of cefixime to take at home. After four days, I had another stool test, which showed no occult blood and no white blood cells. But why are there still blood streaks in my baby's stool?

Doctor's answer:

The baby's stool contains red streaks like blood, which may be caused by intestinal inflammation. If the child is breastfed, it's also possible that the mother consumed extremely cold or refrigerated foods.
1. Have the child's stool tested for routine examination to determine if there is intestinal inflammation. If it is present, active anti-inflammatory treatment is required.
2. If the child is breastfed, the mother should avoid consuming extremely cold or refrigerated foods such as oranges, tangerines, grapefruits, grapes, watermelons, cantaloupe, and dragon fruits.
