Features: Guided by system theory, the study investigates the formation and distribution of groundwater in the Yellow River Basin. Groundwater systems are divided as the basis for calculating groundwater resources. Based on the principle of water balance, the quantity of groundwater resources is calculated according to the characteristics of aquifer systems and hydrogeological parameters in different groundwater systems. By analyzing the input, output, and transport characteristics of groundwater systems, the groundwater storage is calculated for provinces, regions, and counties in the administrative areas included in the systems.
Based on the theory of the water cycle, the regional transformation trends of surface water and groundwater in the Yellow River Basin are studied using the concept of "three-water" transformation.
Based on investigations, the regional development and utilization level of groundwater is analyzed in detail. Due to the coexistence of groundwater development potential and over-extraction, the development potential and classification are analyzed for each county, and over-extraction areas are identified.
Meanwhile, based on the occurrence conditions, development and utilization conditions, extraction potential, and environmental conditions of groundwater, the direction of groundwater development and utilization is proposed. To expand the exploitable volume of groundwater, research on underground water allocation and storage is conducted.
