Due to humiliation and failed love, he leaves to make his fortune and returns to take revenge on the landlord, Edgar Linton, and his children, who married his former lover, Catherine. The entire story is filled with a strong spirit of fighting against oppression and striving for happiness, while always shrouded in a mysterious and tense romantic atmosphere. Initially, it was regarded as the naive fantasy of a young female writer detached from reality. However, combined with the intense class struggle in the region it portrays and the social phenomena of England, it was soon highly praised by critics and warmly welcomed by readers.
