Is it normal for a baby to consume 600ml of milk per day without solid food?

Patient's question:

My baby is 4 months old and hasn't been given complementary foods yet. The daily milk intake is 600ml, is that normal? This month, during the child health check-up, they only gained 1 pound. They eat a maximum of 150ml at a time, sometimes only 100ml.

Doctor's answer:

The stomach capacity of a normal four-month-old baby is 120-180ml. They are fed five times a day, every four hours, with each feeding amounting to 200ml. The daily milk intake for a four-month-old baby should be ensured to be 800ml. Babies also have individual differences. If the baby's milk intake is low, you can give them more digestible fluids or add some fruit juice. At four months, you can start feeding prepared food before milk, and provide supplementary food between milk feedings. You can start with rice cereal first, and gradually introduce other supplementary foods after the baby's gastrointestinal function recovers.
