Does it normal for the baby to frequently hiccup?

Patient's question:

My cousin got into a fight with her husband, so she brought her baby to my house to play. While I was playing with her baby, I noticed that the baby often hiccuped, and the sound of hiccuping was quite loud, like an adult hiccuping, which was quite funny. My cousin said she didn't know why either, but her baby really did hiccup frequently.
What kind of help is needed: Is it normal for a 2-month-old baby to hiccup frequently?

Doctor's answer:

Babies who are two months old often hiccuping is a normal phenomenon, there is no need to worry too much. Hiccuping is a common symptom during infancy. Continuous hiccuping is caused by spasms of the diaphragm, resulting from the continuous tightening of the diaphragm. The activity of the diaphragm is controlled by the vegetative nervous system. After a child is born, within one or two months, the vegetative nervous system responsible for adjusting the diaphragm has not yet fully developed. When a child is exposed to minor stimuli, such as inhaling cold air or drinking milk too quickly, the diaphragm may suddenly contract, leading to rapid inhalation and producing the sound of "hic, hic."
