Features: The main purpose of our selection work, to be honest, is to select without editing, avoiding arbitrary judgment or deletion, but striving for completeness. The advantage of these books may lie in preserving more historical authenticity and saving readers the trouble of searching. Most articles published in "Liangyou" are included here, and readers can judge the literary taste of this fashion magazine, which had a significant impact on modern Chinese publishing history, based on their own reading. Now I am the head of a small family, though my responsibilities have become heavier than before, being able to stand on my own is a joy in life. The freedom I had then was at its peak, and through the introduction of Mr. Yu Junheng, I joined the ranks of Yuequn. Although the passion for football was not as intense as in Hong Kong, I was content to continue playing without neglecting it. When I first came to Shanghai, I was greatly impressed by the level of Chinese football here. I felt that there was still much room for improvement in football here. Not fully understanding the true meaning of football, I felt that I should also take some responsibility for football in Shanghai. As for my future football work in Shanghai, I believe the relevant circles have some knowledge of it. To avoid repetition and save space, I will describe the events in the football world over the past five years in a diary format. (For details, see my work "Football")
In the 14th year of the Republic of China, at the age of 52, I continued practicing medicine and publishing books. The Wednesday tea parties had stopped, but the Saturday tea parties and Sunday dinner parties remained. The room I lived in at No. 39 Jing'an Temple Road was to be renovated and converted into a foreign youth association. I had lived there for over eleven years, and I had been practicing medicine and publishing books in Shanghai for over eighteen years. Cao Zihuan said, "Days pass above, and the body declines below, suddenly changing with all things." Tao Shixing said, "Wasting time in idle pleasure and drunkenness, living without benefit to the times and dying without fame, is self-abandonment." Reading their words, I couldn't help but sigh. After moving, I still had plenty of time and planned to focus on reading and writing, refusing all trivial matters. Even medicine, I planned to give up, making a small conclusion. I was a poor scholar, always frugal in everything. Looking back on these eighteen years, the money saved on meat, clothing, riding, and entertainment amounted to over 180 yuan per month. I had often heard that the government planned to reprint the Siku Quanshu, so I prepared a large sum of money to pre-order a copy. Later, although an order was issued, it was suddenly abandoned. Therefore, I selected the rare works from the Siku Quanshu and copied their catalogs, naming it "Essentials of the Siku Quanshu Catalog."
In the 15th year of the Republic of China, at the age of 53, I continued practicing medicine and publishing books, and the Saturday and Guodenglin gatherings remained as usual. For the past few months, I had been annotating the "Daodejing" of Laozi, going out in the morning and returning at night, always carrying a book bag, like a student attending classes. However, recently, with increasing matters, I had little time. Often, I rushed all day without being able to annotate a single word, filled with frustration. Hu Wenzhong said, "Close the door and refuse guests, dedicating oneself to reading is the right way, avoiding the path of socializing." From now on, I planned to firmly implement Hu's words and refuse all social engagements. That year, I wrote the preface to the annotations of the "Daodejing." On the first day of December, I injured my left foot in the morning, and the back of my foot swelled so much that I couldn't walk. It took about two and a half years before I fully recovered. I had been compiling the "Shuowen Jiezi Lin" all year.
In the 16th year of the Republic of China, at the age of 54, I continued practicing medicine and publishing books. Our family also continued to revise the family genealogy, which began in the spring of the 13th year and was completed in February of this year. I donated 400 yuan in funds, so I received eight copies of the genealogy to distribute to poor relatives who were eager to study but could not afford it. I annotated the "Poetry of Tao Yuanming" in four volumes.
In the 17th year of the Republic of China, at the age of 55, I continued practicing medicine and publishing books, and the hometown Star Association remained as usual. The comrades' dinner was changed to Wednesday and held at Juelin. Mr. Niu Tiesheng and Ye Chuchen recommended me as the compiler of the Jiangsu Provincial Gazetteer, but I declined. Zhuangzi said, "Mountain trees, self-cursed. Grease fire, self-boiled." Osmanthus is edible, so it is cut down; lacquer is useful, so it is peeled. Everyone knows the usefulness of usefulness.
