Her parents send her to stay with a rich old woman to visit relatives, where she is seduced by the young master Alec. Later, she falls in love with and becomes engaged to the son of a clergyman, Clare. On their wedding night, she confesses her past misfortune to her husband but fails to receive forgiveness. The couple separates, and her husband goes to Brazil. Several years later, Tess encounters Alec again, who pursues her. Due to financial hardship, she is forced to live with her enemy. Soon after, Clare returns from abroad and expresses remorse for his past cruelty. In this situation, Tess painfully feels that it is Alec d'Urberville who has cost her Clare again, and she furiously kills him. Later, she is arrested and sentenced to hanging.
