Does baby feeding require water?

Patient's question:

Does lactation require water intake? Does exclusive breastfeeding require water intake? Previous treatment history and outcomes: Untreated What kind of assistance is needed: Does exclusive breastfeeding require water intake?

Doctor's answer:

Generally, if complementary foods are not provided within 4 months, there is no need to give water, but it is not forbidden to do so. Appropriately digesting a little water is only beneficial and not harmful to the baby.
Guidance: The recommended amount of water per feeding is as follows:
- Week 2 after birth: 30 ml
- Week 3 after birth: 45 ml
- 1 month: 50–60 ml
- 3 months: 60–75 ml
- 4 months: 70–80 ml
- 6 months: 80–100 ml
- 8–12 months: 100–120 ml
The amount of water per feeding is approximately half the amount of milk. In summer, the water intake should be increased appropriately. During fever, high fever, or when experiencing dry vomiting or nausea/vomiting with dehydration, more frequent water intake is especially necessary.
