To promote English learning among Chinese middle school students, cultivate their cultural literacy and literary appreciation, Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press (SFLP) has, after extensive deliberation and market research, decided to introduce a series of abridged literary classics from Macmillan Publishing Company to Chinese middle school students. SFLP has carefully selected 40 books from Macmillan's abridged literary classics series, compiling them into the "Easy Read Classics Series," with difficulty levels spanning from Level 3 to Level 8 of the "English Curriculum Standards." This series includes classic works by literary masters from the UK, the US, France, and other countries, featuring the works of renowned authors such as Shakespeare, Dickens, Mark Twain, Hardy, and Alexandre Dumas. To help middle school students better grasp the essence of the original works and the creative journeys of the authors, SFLP has specially annotated the language difficulties in the texts and included background introductions about the authors and their works. We sincerely hope that the "Easy Read Classics Series" will help improve the literary appreciation skills of Chinese middle school students, cultivate their moral character, enhance their English reading abilities, and serve as the key to opening the door to English literary classics for them. George Eliot was originally named Mary Ann Evans. Mary Ann was born on November 22, 1819, in a manor house in Warwickshire, England. Mary Ann was not beautiful and often wore plain clothes. However, she was very intelligent, well-educated, and fluent in French, German, Italian, Greek, and Latin. She was also skilled in writing and music. She also had a deep interest in religion, literature, and philosophy. Young Mary Ann was a very devout believer. In 1841, she went to London with her father, where she met many famous figures of the time and discussed philosophy and religion with them. From then on, Mary Ann declared that she no longer believed in God. This story takes place in late 18th and early 19th-century England. For centuries, people had lived in villages and small towns. They worked on estates or in their own homes and rarely left their birthplaces. With the construction of large factories in the towns, people's lives changed. Many moved to these towns to work in factories. In The Weaver on the Water, George Eliot tells us about the life of a weaver. She also shows us the differences between rural and urban life.
