What are the effects of a child crossing their legs?

Patient's question:

What does the child's leg-crossing syndrome affect?

Doctor's answer:

Syndrome of rubbing the legs, which is not uncommon in children, is more prevalent in girls and young children. Children with this syndrome have normal intelligence and are conscious during episodes. The attacks often occur before sleep, upon waking, or during playtime and are usually stopped by distraction. During episodes, girls tend to sit on hard surfaces, pressing their hands on their legs or lower abdomen, with their legs straight and crossed tightly. Their hands may be clenched into fists or gripping something firmly. Boys, on the other hand, often lie on their stomachs, rubbing back and forth, or exhibit similar behaviors to girls.
