Features: This book first briefly introduces cellular mobile communication systems represented by GSM, and then introduces GPRS, a popular technology in today's wireless packet data switching services. It provides a comprehensive top-down introduction to the basic concepts, overall structure, network structure, interfaces and protocols, network management and billing, as well as the call setup process of the GPRS system. Finally, it describes the specific implementation of GPRS through typical application examples and looks ahead to the future development direction and evolution trends of GPRS. The content of the book is novel, concise, and highly practical, making it suitable for engineering technicians with a certain foundation in communication technology and related design personnel in the mobile communication field. It can also serve as a textbook or reference for senior undergraduate and graduate students in communication majors.
1. Overview of Mobile Communication
Mobile communication can be divided into three major categories: terrestrial, marine, and aviation mobile communication. Among these, terrestrial communication involves a broad technical field, is characterized by novelty and high difficulty, and has strong network capabilities. Its development trends represent the future direction of the entire mobile communication industry. Terrestrial mobile communication mainly includes cellular mobile communication, cordless phones, wireless paging, trunked mobile communication, decentralized communication, and satellite mobile communication, among others. This chapter provides a brief overview of the history, relevant technical characteristics, and future development of mobile communication systems, preparing the groundwork for subsequent chapters.
1.1 Introduction to Cellular Mobile Communication Systems
In the late 1960s, institutions such as Bell Labs in the United States proposed the concept and theory of cellular systems. By the 1970s, the widespread application of large-scale integrated circuits and microprocessing technology provided the technical foundation for the realization of cellular mobile communication, and the emergence of surface mount technology (SMT) further accelerated its development. By the late 1970s and early 1980s, the world saw the emergence of cellular mobile communication systems— analog cellular mobile communication systems. It is customary to refer to analog cellular mobile communication systems as first-generation mobile phones, including the AMPS in the United States, NMT in Northern Europe, TACS in the United Kingdom, and HCMTS in Japan. The main characteristics of analog cellular communication systems are:
- Proposed a cellular network structure with a hexagonal cell layout;
- Adopted frequency reuse and FDMA technology to improve spectral efficiency and system capacity;
- Achieved intercell handover, inter-area handover, and automatic roaming;
- The development of analog cellular networks marked a revolution in mobile communication.
