Patient's question:
Born 21 days ago, the past few days, eating and sleeping have been regular, about every 3 to 4 hours. Why is the daytime sleep time now shorter, crying after less than an hour and wanting to nurse? My milk supply is insufficient, and I also give formula. What kind of assistance do you need: Why is it now eating...Doctor's answer:
Guidance:1. Self-perception of breasts: Before breastfeeding, a mother's breasts feel full, surface veins are more prominent, and milk is easily expressed when pressed. After breastfeeding, the breasts feel softer and slightly relaxed.
2. Sound of feeding: On average, a baby makes swallowing sounds after 2–3 sucks, indicating sufficient milk supply. If this continues for about 10 minutes, it is likely enough to satisfy the baby. If the baby struggles to feed or continues to suck on the nipple after finishing, it may mean the baby is not well-fed.
3. Baby's satisfaction: A well-fed baby will feel content and may sleep peacefully for 2–4 hours. If the baby cries or wakes up before sleeping for 1–2 hours, it often indicates hunger, and the milk amount should be increased appropriately.
4. Urination and defecation frequency: The frequency and appearance of a baby's bowel and bladder movements can reflect their hunger and fullness. Breastfed babies have golden-yellow stools, while formula-fed babies have lighter yellow, drier stools. If a baby has 2–4 bowel movements daily and 8–9 wet diapers, it means they are well-fed. If the baby's stools are green, watery, and contain a lot of mucus, it may indicate hunger.
