The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is set in London in 1889. Dr. Jekyll is deeply concerned with human good and evil, and he hopes to eliminate "evil" from people, leaving only "good" in the world. For this purpose, he bravely chooses himself as the subject of his experiments. Although he succeeds in separating the "good" and "evil" within a person's mind, it contradicts his original intention because he eliminates the "good" and leaves only the "evil." The "evil" embodiment born from the experiments commits countless misdeeds. Dr. Jekyll does his utmost to distance himself from the demon, but finally fails repeatedly due to the demon's temptation. Dr. Jekyll finds the only way to expel the demon from his heart, but at the cost of his own death. The work reflects the sharp opposition between good and evil through Dr. Jekyll's death. The author uses Dr. Jekyll to represent the upper class of Britain, while Mr. Hyde represents the lower class of Britain.
