Compared to the earlier two artistic peaks, 19th-century painting reflects the transition from traditional to modern forms, featuring diverse schools and styles, and progressing through stages such as Neoclassicism, Romanticism, Realism, Impressionism, Symbolism, and Post-Impressionism. It became the historical source for various modernist movements in the 20th century.

Furthermore, the book is well-researched and rich in content, closely linking the artists' lives to historical contexts and social conditions.
