Patient's question:
I got married to my husband very late, and it took us two years of hard work to finally have a baby. Our bodies are generally considered to be in good health, but for some reason, the baby's health started to decline after birth. Recently, when we went to the hospital for a check-up, we found out that the baby has been diagnosed with cerebral palsy. What kind of help do I need: Why did my child develop cerebral palsy?
Doctor's answer:
Cerebral palsy typically manifests before birth or during infancy, with causes including: birth injuries, neonatal jaundice, brain hypoxia, and premature birth. The main symptoms are increased muscle tone, difficulty with abduction, and in severe cases, muscle rigidity, scar contractures, and joints maintaining a flexed position. In mild cases, there may be poor fine motor skills in the hands and inability to place the heels on the ground when walking. These patients often also have language development delays, speech disorders, and strabismus. Approximately one-third of patients experience varying degrees of tics and intellectual disabilities.
