When should tonsils be removed?

Patient's question:

I am 12 years old. I have enlarged tonsils. It's easy for me to get a fever in winter. When I have a fever, I cough, but I don't have high fever or inflammation. I have been treated, and the doctor suggested removing them. I don't know what to do.

Doctor's answer:

Chronic tonsillar hypertrophy indeed tends to recur frequently due to colds or fever, severely interfering with physical health and quality of life.
The indications for tonsillectomy are: when the enlarged tonsils obstruct breathing, causing symptoms such as snoring, choking, or difficulty breathing. If the indications for tonsillectomy are met, the tonsils should be removed. Frequent inflammation of the enlarged tonsils is not an indication for surgery. Even if the enlarged tonsils frequently inflame, surgery should not be performed if they do not obstruct breathing.
