Features: As the century clock strikes, while Chinese people eagerly anticipate the turn of the new millennium, they also dream of another milestone—the inclusion into the World Trade Organization (WTO) when stepping into the 21st century. This dream has been longed for, and it is both a dream and a reality. From GATT (General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade) to WTO (World Trade Organization), the simple arrangement of these English letters encapsulates half a century of tumultuous history. "Joining the customs union" and "Joining the world" hold profound meanings for the Chinese people, too profound to be expressed in words. On November 15, 1999, China and the United States reached a bilateral agreement, marking a critical step toward the WTO. In 2000, a series of exciting developments followed, and as of now, China has signed bilateral agreements with 36 WTO member states. Meanwhile, negotiations with the next counterpart—Mexico—are underway. After 15 years of arduous efforts, China is about to become an equal member of the World Trade Organization, this international economic club.
