What is hearing screening?

Patient's question:

My cousin just had a baby boy, who is very cute and adorable. When I went to see him, I happened to see a nurse carrying him inside. At first, I thought they were taking him for a bath, but my cousin said it wasn't that. It was for a hearing screening. After a short while, the nurse brought him back and said he was very healthy and there were no problems.
What kind of assistance is needed: What exactly is a newborn hearing screening?

Doctor's answer:

When newborns referred from hearing screening for auditory brainstem response (ABR) testing, various conditions such as normal, mild, moderate, or severe hearing loss can occur again, which should not be considered unusual in clinical diagnosis. Therefore, even if the screening instrument indicates "failed," it does not necessarily mean "deaf or profoundly deaf." For safety, if there is suspicion of hearing loss, please consult a pediatric audiologist in the otolaryngology department for further precise audiological examinations and tests. Long-term hearing monitoring and follow-up data are also necessary.
