Features: The German Cultural Exchange Office sent someone to pick me up. Friends from Berlin also came, bringing flowers, and even I, who don’t particularly like flowers, felt moved. I haven’t seen her in two years. Two years ago, my friend worried about not having a job or a steady income, but now she has a high-paying job and is worried that she’s too busy to do what she wants to do. And Robert? Robert brought a gift for her—a beautifully wrapped bottle of Berlin beer! Hong Kong poet and essayist Ersi was invited by the German Cultural Exchange Office to serve as a resident writer in Berlin in 1998. After that, she returned to Berlin several times, allowing her to observe the series of dialogues between history and reality that have unfolded in this country amid great changes. Immersed in a land that gave birth to figures like Goethe and Bach, the author approaches the subject with the coolness of a scholar, constantly reflecting and analyzing between her own traditions and foreign cultures. At the same time, with the nimble of a poet, she captures the vibrant and colorful side of Germany as a land of splendid culture.
