The Catcher in the Rye features the protagonist Holden Caulfield, a 16-year-old high school student, as one of the earliest antiheroes in modern American literature. Holden comes from a wealthy middle-class family in New York City. Teachers and his parents force him to study hard so he can achieve success and buy a Cadillac in the future. However, all he does at school is talk about women, alcohol, and sex. He despises everything around him and has no interest in studying, which results in frequent punishments. When he is expelled for the fourth time, he is too afraid to go home and instead wanders alone in the most prosperous city in the United States—New York—for a day and two nights. He stays in cheap motels, frequents nightclubs, and engages in casual relationships with women. He spends his time bored in movie theaters, accidentally hires a prostitute, and uncontrollably embraces his (vanity) girlfriend. Meanwhile, his inner turmoil is intense as he tries to escape the hypocritical adult world to seek purity and truth. This extreme mental conflict ultimately leads to his complete breakdown, and he ends up lying in a mental hospital.
