Chest Radiology Guide

Features: The intended readers of this book are primarily radiology residents, but also include medical students, pulmonology fellows, and emergency department personnel (nurses, physician assistants, etc.). The purpose of this book is to serve as a guide for interpreting adult chest X-ray images in both practice and teaching, as chest X-ray is one of the most commonly used radiologic examinations and also one of the most challenging to interpret. Based on our experience, there is no single method for interpreting chest images. Although each chapter focuses on differential diagnosis, the cases cited in this book adopt a combination of different imaging methods for interpretation. For appropriate cases, we use basic methods to interpret images, such as the anatomical location of lesions or the disease progression method. For complex cases, we emphasize differential imaging. The content of this book is divided into five chapters: 1) Methods; 2) Lungs; 3) Mediastinum; 4) Chest Wall, Pleura, and Diaphragm; and 5) Common Medical Problems. Each chapter is appropriately divided into logical categories, such as inflammation, tumors, vascular lesions, congenital abnormalities, trauma, etc., ranging from common to rare conditions. In a natural classification, some entries cannot be categorized. Although we have tried to place these entries into the most logical categories, it seems impossible. This book uses a case-based teaching approach, making it highly practical, but it cannot be exhaustive or include all diseases. It covers common lesions encountered in traditional hospital-clinic-radiology practice and the content required to obtain a radiology certification. The cases selected are not intended to be comprehensive or showcase uniqueness, but merely representative. We have strived to demonstrate the different features of lesions to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the discussed diseases. We hope this book will serve as a true guidebook—a working textbook—where readers can add their own notes to personalize it and enhance their medical practice in this field.
