Can you pick out the booger in the baby's nose?

Patient's question:

For the past three months, the baby has been doing well during naps at night, but when they wake up at night, their nose starts making snoring sounds. Sometimes they even breathe through their mouth, which makes us feel very painful, but we don't know what to do. During the day, there is nasal mucus, and then...

Doctor's answer:

Before stopping the bleeding, the blood clot should be blown out first to avoid the wound from not closing properly and preventing medication from being applied.
2. Moisten the cotton with a decongestant or nasal spray to assist in applying medication. Vinegar can also be used.
3. Pinch part of the nose with your fingers and press firmly for five to seven minutes to help apply medication.
4. Sit straight to prevent blood from flowing to the throat.
5. Cold compress can constrict blood vessels, increasing bleeding.
6. After blood clots form, a scab will develop. At this time, it is best not to pick the nose to avoid the scab falling off and triggering another nosebleed.
7. Applying antibiotic or steroid ointment can reduce swelling, relieve pain, and prevent mucus from drying out.
8. If the left (right) nostril is bleeding, raise the right (left) arm, and medication can be applied after a few minutes.
9. Bring the bleeding side of the nostril toward the bridge of the nose and maintain it for 5 to 10 minutes to allow the blood to clot before applying medication. If both nostrils are bleeding, pinch both sides of the nostril. After the bleeding stops, there will often be blood clots in the nostrils. Do not rush to remove them, and avoid forceful hiccups or rubbing to prevent re-injury.
10. When the left (right) nostril is bleeding, the other person can hook the patient’s right (left) middle finger with their middle finger and bend it firmly. Medication can usually be applied within seconds. Alternatively, tie a cloth strip around the patient’s middle finger root: tie the right (left) middle finger if the left (right) nostril is bleeding. After the bleeding stops, remove the cloth strip.
11. Take a sufficient amount of garlic, peel it, and mash it into a paste. Apply it to the sole of the foot and wrap it with gauze to stop bleeding more quickly.
12. Have the patient sit in a chair and soak their feet in hot water to stop the nosebleed.
13. Lie flat on the ground. Blood cannot flow in or out, and medication can be applied quickly.
14. If nosebleeds occur frequently, seek further medical diagnosis at a hospital (both psychological and physical examinations are necessary).
Medical Advice:
1. Once a child is diagnosed with rhinitis, medication should be used cautiously, as drugs with significant side effects may adversely affect adolescents' growth and development. Never use adult rhinitis medication to treat children under 12.
2. Many children with rhinitis are reluctant to take medication or undergo surgery due to discomfort, crying, and tantrums, which can be frustrating for parents. Even slight improvement may lead them to stop treatment prematurely. However, rhinitis has not been fully treated at this stage. Treating rhinitis requires persistence—stopping treatment too early is ineffective.
3. For adolescents with rhinitis, safety must be the top priority. In clinical practice, many patients develop drug-induced rhinitis due to long-term or improper medication use, often (nasal dryness), severe nasal congestion, or impaired sense of smell, which are difficult to repair. Therefore, for chronic cases with no significant improvement after (standard medication treatment) for more than 8 weeks, alternative treatments should be considered. Currently, with medical advancements, surgery is no longer as painful as before. Minimally invasive treatments using endoscopy have made rhinitis treatment much easier.
