Features: The philosophy of progress presented in this book suggests that philosophy advances not by becoming more rigorous but by becoming more imaginative. Progress in this field, like most other fields, is achieved by some individuals in each generation who recognize possibilities previously unrealized. Part of the book ("Truth and Some Philosophers") deals with the various things contemporary philosophers say about truth. The eight essays in this part do not articulate a theory of truth or a definition of "truth." The second part ("Moral Progress: Towards More Inclusive Communities") includes four essays on moral progress. The third part ("The Role of Philosophy in Human Progress") is more heterogeneous. One of its essays is metaphysical. It attempts to say something about what philosophers can do for human progress.
