Reasons why a baby's stool is green

Patient's question:

Hello:
Gender: Male
Age: 2 months and 5 days
When the child was around 51 days old, they had jaundice checked at the hospital, and the jaundice index was a bit high. They were hospitalized for a week and are now recovering at home (they came home on November 12). The doctor asked to come back for a check-up in about 15 days. However, in the past two or three days, the child's stool has turned green. Is the stool normal? What could be the reason? I am very worried. Thank you.

Doctor's answer:

Hello, since a baby's digestive function is very different from that of an adult, it is not appropriate to simply and roughly measure a baby's poop using adult standards. One of the main characteristics of a baby's poop is its constantly changing colors. Generally, changes in stool color are primarily related to the time food stays in the intestine and bile. When milk passes through a baby's intestine quickly and is expelled, the resulting poop is yellow. As the digestive function improves, the time milk stays in the intestine gradually increases, and the poop color gradually changes to green. At the slowest elimination rate, the poop becomes brown.
Therefore, if a child's poop is green and there are no issues after testing, as well as no problems with the child's diet or sleep, there is no need to worry excessively.
